Last weekend's soccer & shopping in Insadong

Sangyeon and I went shopping in Insadong, the tourist market street in Seoul, on Sunday, to shop for gifts for some long-overdue parcels that I have been meaning to send. Insadong is lovely and charming, and has loads of cute little tea shops and art cafes. I love going there!

We said a very sad farewell to Korea on Saturday, as they bowed out of the World Cup. Even Arend's mean red horns couldn't help them. They played very well though, and everyone was pretty proud to be a Red for the night.

WC WC WC WC :)

We had an awesome night out on Tuesday, watching Bafana Bafana surprise everyone and pull off a win against France! It's a pity they couldn't progress to the last 16, but they really did us proud anyway! And then we had some food to keep up our strenghts for the next game - Korea drew with Nigeria and they made it through to the next round. It's only the second time in their history that they have gone this far in the World Cup, so needless to say everyone was in high spirits! We walked home as the sun was coming up and then had delicious pork rib stew! I was so tired at school, I think I fell asleep a couple of times during class, but my students were very impressed with my hardcore enthusiasm!
Looking forward to the start of the last 16 now!!!

Home-made support

I tried my damndest to find a Bafana soccer jersey - in the shops, on the internet...but nothing!
So I finally decided to just make one! Now we all know I'm not an artist by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't think I did too badly...

Starting off...

Hard at work...

Getting there...

Almost done...

The final product...I didn't have much time before the game tomorrow, so it isn't great, but I like it! Notice my little Vuvuzela to the right ;)

Good luck Bafana Bafana, South Africans all over the globe will be rooting for you! We♥U

Thanks Lanie

I just made this little photo 'display' (for lack of a better word) before Kian Adam was born, and now I'll have to re-arrange it all! So Lana, that means you are going to have to send me some photos of the little guy ;)
Loving all the nieces & nephews, Janine you are next!

Amidst the craziness

Just to show you that life continues as normal, despite the hectic football schedule on top of normal crazy life!!
This morning I squeezed juice from some beautiful grapefruits I bought in the market. I could feel the goodness seeping into my blood when I drank it :) It made me miss Mom/Deano's veggie garden so much!

The next two pictures are of a task one of my students had to do. They were each assigned an 'unusual situation' they were found in, and then had to explain their way out of it. I hope this is not a reflection on me...!! It was quite entertaining to read though!

Good luck to Bafana Bafana tonight for their match against Uruguay. I'm going to try and drag myself out of bed at 3:30 am, but if I don't, I'll be dreaming of your victory!!

World Cup Fever!

World Cup fever has hit here big time!! Especially after Korea's excellent performance against Greece last night, everyone is super excited! I had such a good time watching Bafana Bafana play Mexico on Friday night too, they played so well - I was so proud, and so homesick!!

Jebu Island

On Sunday Sangyeon took me to Jebu do, a tiny island just off the west coast close to Suwon. It is so small, that the road to the island becomes submerged when the tide comes in everyday ~ so you really have to plan your travel time if you don't want to get stuck on the island!!

It's really a small island, so there isn't much to do, but that makes it a perfect place to go and relax!!

Our guesthouse - Migo

The charming little room, it was great!

We bought a kite and had fun flying it around on the beach.

There were loads of amazing kites being flown, plus a few micro-light thingys flying around.

Our delicious lunch of prawns and fresh shell fish!!

The 'secret road' to the island.

Congratulations to Lana, Fritjof and Siana, on the new addition to their family. Kian Adam, welcome to the world :) Everybody is delighted that you arrived in time for the World Cup on Friday ;)

Weather report: it is sooooo hot here, I can't even remember how I survived last year. And the humidity hasn't even set in yet....I seem to have a constant headache, no matter how much water I drink or how many headache pills I pop. I guess I'm not used to the extreme tempretures, unlike the lovely, mild climate we have in SA. I'm not complaining though...just hope this means I'll have many trips to the beach this summer!

Some day-off exercise

They had city council elections all over Korea yesterday so we got an unexpected day off! My Dutch friend Arend, and I went to climb Gwanggyo mountain at the northern part of the city. I've climbed it a couple of times, but I forgot how awesome the views are, and how nice it is to be out in the fresh air. Arend is a mushroom scientist who is obsessed with bugs, so he picked up every insect we walked past. And at the bottom of the hike is a beautiful natural spring with MASSIVE koi swimming in it. Check out more photos on Facebook. There's also a little reflexology stone path for your tired feet once you get down. It was great.
